Facilitating Learning: The Learner

How Students Learn

The point seems obvious but it is worth reiterating that learning will not automatically occur when teachers teach. Effective teaching is not just a matter of handing out information and reinforcements; it is the more complex process of facilitating learners in constructing meaning for themselves. Teachers, therefore, need to take into account learners’ cognitive processes—how information is received, processed, encoded or lost—so as to adopt their teaching accordingly.
