This study involves a survey on students' perception and usage of
the NUSCast service provided by CIT. The NUSCast facility has two distinct
components. The first component is NUSLive: the realtime streaming of the
lecture, while it is in progress in the lecture theatre, across the campus
network. The second component is Multimedia-on-Demand (MOD): the archived
lecture that is made available to on-line users on demand. The objectives of
this study are to explore:
- utilisation of NUSLive by students to view live lectures
on-line
- incidence of reduction in attendance in lectures as a result of
NUSLive service
- extent and scope of using NUSCast service for revision purposes
- comparative analysis of frequency and effective use of NUSLive
and NUSCast
- effect of NUSCast (live and archived lectures) on students'
understanding of a subject compared to attending lectures
- effect of NUSCast on acquiring knowledge compared to attending
lectures
- need for extended NUSCast service to other subjects
- quality of technology and technical problems in accessing
NUSCast services
- negative effects, if any, of NUSCast on student learning
- overall reaction of students to this service
The survey of students who were exposed to NUSCast and the
preliminary data analyses have been completed. The final report is forthcoming
in 2001.
