Eligibility

All ATEA and OEA Nominees should be faculty members (full-time or part-time**) and should also be current faculty teaching award winners. In addition, OEA nominees should have taught for at least 3 preceding years.

**
- part-time and adjunct teaching staff, but not visiting staff
- part-time teaching staff who have substantial involvement over an extended period; this includes teaching at least one module/semester in its entirety (i.e. not just a part of a team-taught module/course), and engaging in various teaching activities; should be involved, at least, in lecturing, tutoring and assessment.

Basic requirements: Threshold

Student Opinion, as can be inferred from SF: the quantitative scores in student feedback should not be below the Faculty average. There should be repeated comments in SF that point to high quality in the ability to effectively deliver well-prepared and well-organized lectures with appropriate knowledge content, to explain ideas and concepts, to make the lectures interesting and enjoyable.

Repeated complaints from students about poor aspects of classroom instruction would be counted against the candidate. Statements about high quality in classroom instruction should be confirmed in Peer Reviews.

Student Assessment: Poor design of assessment tasks and the repetition of questions asked in previous examinations, class tests or tutorials would be counted against the candidate.

Range of teaching: There should be a reasonable range of teaching with respect to levels (1000, 2000, etc.), class size, subject matter etc.

Nominees and FTEC committees are strongly encouraged to explain if these criteria are not met or are not applicable.

Value adding Aspects of teaching

  1. Development Of Modules: Modules designed by candidates have something unique in them, e.g., an innovative conceptualization, a design in harmony with the educational goals of the department or the broad educational goals of the university.

  2. Project And Research Supervision: In about 200 words, describe why the candidate is a good supervisor and attach a list of people (with contact information) supervised over the last 3 years.

  3. Materials Adopted By Others: This may include web materials, textbooks published by reputable publishers as well as unpublished materials that are widely adopted. Please provide information regarding users and usage level.

  4. Educational Leadership Activities: Claims of educational reform and leadership call for the demonstration of the impact on education, within the University. For example, this may include having made a significant improvement to the teaching and curriculum development (this should go beyond implementation of a single module) in the Department, Faculty or University.

  5. Educational Impact at National/International Level: This refers to educational impact at national and/or international levels via involvement in educational administration or serving in educational organizations, initiating innovative modes of teaching and assessing students, providing consultation on education or via outreach programmes.

  6. Scholarship In Teaching: It refers to systemic inquiry into and reflection on teaching practices and student learning, and publication of one’s findings. This should not be confused with research in one’s discipline.

  7. Professional Development As A Teacher: Commitment to Professional Development may be manifested through participation in educational conferences, seminars, workshops and lectures (either as a participant, presenter or facilitator).
