Colons
The colon ( : ) used in writing is spelled the same
way as the colon you would find on an anatomy chart. However, they are
worlds apart. In writing, colons are useful signposts for writing. Here
are the ways in which they are used:
to introduce a list or a quotation; |
to introduce a sentence element that explains or illustrates
the preceding independent clause; |
between a title and its subtitle; |
not when a verb is used to introduce a list; |
not when a preposition is used to introduce a list;
not when phrases such as like, including, such as and
for example are used to introduce a list. |
