Frequently Misused Words

There are some words and phrases that are frequently misused, resulting in ungrammatical and semantically incorrect forms. Here are two of them:

Comprise

The committee comprises of the chairperson and three members.
The committee comprises the chairperson and three members.
The committee is comprised of the chairperson and three members.
(Possible source of confusion: consist of)

Regardless

Everyone gets a chance to vote irregardless of race, gender or religion.
Everyone gets a chance to vote regardless of race, gender or religion.
Of American origin, “irregardless” has been used in casual or non-standard speech and writing; but it has been widely considered as an inappropriate union of “irrespective” and “regardless”, and an absurd combination of “the negative ir- prefix and -less suffix in a single term” (The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, 2000). Thus for formal writing, “regardless” is more appropriate.
